ULYSSES by Tennyson Tennyson's Ulysses is an old and tired king who rules over an island inhabited by people who are only concerned with material life. He has fought in the war of Troy, he has met dangers and adventures of all sorts and he “became a name” famous all over the world. So Ulysses becomes the expression of the dynamic man Tennyson's times, who believes that he has the right and the duty of exploit all the possibilities of the human intelligence. Under this aspect he is contrasted only with his son Telemachus who represents the balancing force of stability and conservation. Ulysses opens his monologue by revealing dissatisfaction and contempt for his present life, which is boring and meaningless, he feels a deep nostalgia for his past adventures and glory. He asserts”I am a part of all that I have met” implying that his life has been moulded by his experiences, which are compared to “an arch”. In the second part Ulysses introduces the character of his son Telemachus who is described as the typical Victorian man, for a more uneventful life, devoted to responsibilities and social duties. In the last part of the monologue Ulysses is aware that death will soon put an end to everything, and yet he issues his proud challenge to the oncoming nothingness openly turning to his mariners and proposing a voyage into the unknown to them. That gives a note of melancholy to the poem which filters through lines like: “made weak by time and fate”, “you and I are old”, etc. Charles Dickens is one of the greatest novelists as well as one of the most remarkable representatives of Victorian Compromise. He hated the conditions of life and work in the industrial towns and criticised them in his novels Young David is sent to work in a warehouse, just as Dickens himself was. Later David earns his living by writing, just as Dickens did. Dickens himself had a difficulty, unhappy childhood, and young David's life is not at all easy. The story take place in the Victorian England Places are often closed and the interiors of the buildings are explicitly described by the narrator. The setting often reflects feelings, emotions and ideas of the characters. From the setting we can understand the background and the social position of the characters. There is an explicit narrator that coincides with David Copperfield himself; David Copperfield is a first person narrator, he speaks as “I” and he comments on the story explaining his opinions and his thoughts.
