Jean Rhys, whose real name was Ella Gwen Rees Williams, was born in 1894 in the West Indies, on the Island of Dominica, an island with a tormented and bloody history because during the 19th century, Dominica passed from a slave to a colonial society, so the dominant language remained a French patois. Rhys origins influenced her work: indeed, Dominica was an island of lush vegetation and natural beauty so in Wide Sargasso Sea dominate images of this primitive and beautiful island.
