The story is narrated through the letters which Mr Walton writes to his sister. In these letters he tells her the story of his trip to the north pole and his strange encounter with Dr Frankenstein. While the icebreaker on which Walton was sailing on was blocked because of the thickness of the ice, Walton saw a huge figure, too tall to be human, running fast on a sledge. They kept staring at it as long as it vanished in thin air.
The following day, after the ice had broken and they had been able to continue their journey, they found another sledge lied on floating sheet of ice.
