OSCAR WILDE: RIASSUNTO DELLA VITA E OPERE IN INGLESE

OSCAR WILDE'S LIFE. He was born in Dublin in 1854 and died in 1900.

He can be considered as the most important author of the English aestheticism.
He had a very particular way of living.
In fact, his mother dressed him as a female because she wanted a little girl, this fact can explain why he became a homosexual.
He was a very clever student at school but shy with no friends.
When he was at Oxford he met Walter Pater who influenced him a lot for his non conventional ideas about art and life.
He lived during the Victorian age, a period of obscurity, false morality and hypocrisy. So , since he was a very extravagant man , very eccentric and anti – conformist, he did everything he could to shock the hypocrite aristocracy of his time as dressing in a very strange way, for example with coloured clothes but above all keeping a sunflower while walking in Piccadilly.

OSCAR WILDE RIASSUNTO DELLA VITA IN INGLESE

Oscar Wilde could not accept the falsity of the rich people, the false morality of the women who apparently had a respectable family, but on the other hand had one o or more illegal relationship.

This was only appearance that did not reveal the paradox of the period: in this period in fact there were a lot of poor children, a lot of illnesses, bad conditions in factories but also great inventions (telegraph, telephone, photography etc …): the so-called Victorian compromise.
After his degree, his geniality was really appreciated not only in England but also in America. Here at the custom’s officer he said:" I have nothing to declare except my genius”
Then he married and had two children.
In 1891 he published his masterpiece “the picture of Dorian gray” and he reached fame and success.

In 1895 he published his best comedy “The importance of being Earnest " and was condemned with two years of prison because the famous lord Douglas accused him of having a homosexual relationship with his son. He did not deny anything, because he had the courage to accept his sexual inclination.
In prison he had a great change in his life since he converted to Catholicism.
APHORIMS
The true perfection of man lies not in what man has, but in what man is.
Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught. Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation.
Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess.
To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.
Action is the last refuge of those who cannot dream.
Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.
The heart was made to be broken.

OSCAR WILDE RIASSUNTO IL RITRATTO DI DORIAN GRAY

The picture of Dorian Gray. Published in 1891, this novel represents Wilde as a decadent aesthete poet, because Gray (= Wilde) lived his life according to total pleasure and enjoyment typical of an aesthete (think about Andrea Sperelli in "il piacere " by G. D'Annunzio), but he repents of being so cruel and superficial. Unfortunately it was too late, in fact the actress he loved committed suicide before.
In the end he decided to destroy the picture that before had given him a lot of pleasure, but then represented only his amoral sorrow. He stab the picture to destroy the myth of beauty it represented, but in reality he killed himself: the picture became beautiful again while he died as an old man.
