The rise of the novel - During the 18th century there was the rise of the novel.

A novel is a fictional prose narrative with some characters and some actions. The novel was a very popular form of entertainment especially among the middle class readers of which it mirrored the main values . These values were also linked to puritanism. These values were: hard work, religion, family and money. For the puritans the most important thing was the climbing of the social ladder. For them , the more people worked , the more they were in God’s grace.

THE RISE OF THE NOVEL 18TH CENTURY

The typically hero of the novel was the self-made man, the homo economicus, the man that can control the environment and the reality around him thanks to his skills and abilities.

Another characteristic of the novel was realism. The story told by the written had to seem true. In fact the characters have common names and in the titles of the novels there are common names, for example Robison Crusoe, Gulliver’s travels, Pamela, etc. Being realistic the writers were very detailed in the discretions and they paid a great attention to places , dates, events, streets and towns. The narrator used the first-person and third-person narration and the events were told chronologically.

The first novel was Robison Crusoe and the author, Daniel Defoe, is considered the father of the English novel. Robinson represented the typical middle class hero. Robinson was a young boy who decided to leave his family because he wanted to have a life full of adventures. He started to travel by sea but during a journey he was a shipwrecked on a desert island and he was obligated to live alone for many years . One day he saved a native and he called him Friday. When he is saved he will discover that he had became rich. The theme of the novel : first of all the climbing of the social class, the theme of colonization (Master-Slave) , the theme of the parable of the prodigal son. Robinson had disobeyed his father and for this reason he was punished and finally saved.
