The general mood of the twentieth century is divided in two parts: from a part there is a high level of civilization and industrialization of England, from the other part there is a dissatisfaction of the individual, who don’t feel part of this era of changes. The intellectual don’t integrate with the society. This is the century of the two World Wars, of the Wall Street crash, of the Rush Socialism. After this period in England there is the Welfare State and the literature is characterized by the modernism: an experimentation of new form of art and the search of new values. So the fiction changes and begins to present the people in the social contest. The characters are real, not imaginary and became important for their inner selves and not because what going around or outside them. In this way there is a discovery of the individuality and the man show how the external events influence on that happens behind him. So the interest of the novel moving from the society to the man with the psychoanalysis. An important character of this period is Froid who studies the psychoanalysis and formulas theories about the unconscious that is on the motives of the actions of the man.
