New York.

New York is the biggest city in the USA, the most famous in the world and the most populated in the USA with a population of about 8 million people from different ethnic groups. Half of the population of New York is of foreign birth or parentage. Approximately 800 languages are spoken in New York. New York is an important centre for international affairs and generally considered the cultural capital of the world. It’s also called “the Big Apple”, “the city that never sleeps” and “the capital of the world”. Its first inhabitants were the Native Americans who lived on the island of “Manhatin”, or “hilly island”. Giovanni da Verrazzano arrived here in 1524, but first Europeans to settle were the Dutch in 1625. They named the island “New Amsterdam”, but it was renamed after the arrival of the British, who became its owners in 1664.

They called it “New York” in honour of the Duke of York. New York is divided into 5 boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island and Queens.
Manhattan is home to most of the city skyscrapers, such as the Empire State Building. It was the world’s tallest building for 40 years. Now it’s the tallest building in New York City. Near it there’s Fifth Avenue. It’s a street with department stores, luxuries brand shop and boutiques and famous jewellers. There are lots of districts in Manhattan, such as Little Italy, Chinatown and Harlem.
Central Park is the city’s large urban public park, and it’s the heart of the city. Ground Zero is also in Manhattan. It’s the official name is the 9/11 Memorial. It’s on the site of the Twin Towers in New York before 9-11-2001 when they were destroyed by a terrorist attack.

NEW YORK BREVE DESCRIZIONE

Architects Michael Arad and Peter Walker won a special competition and designed it. There are two waterfalls and reflecting pools with the names of the 2892 victims inscribed on bronze panels in the pools. 415 trees all the same size surround them. The main street is Broadway, known as “the Great White Way” and it’s New York’s world famous theatre district. Times Square is the crossroads of the world: here there is the famous Broadway theatre district and it’s a traditional spot to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Near it there is the Metropolitan Museum of art.

Also Wall Street lies in hover Manhattan and it’s the financial capital of the world. It’s in fact home to New York Stock Exchange.
Another boroughs is Brooklyn, it’s the city’s most populous borough, known for its cultural diversity. Most of its territory is hilly and that is why the Dutch called it “broken land”. Brooklyn Bridge is the most famous bridge in the world and it links Brooklyn to Manhattan.
