The plot. The plot of the novel is not very simple because it involves two generations. The central hero is Heathcliff. He is a parentless waif and one day he is picked up in the streets of Liverpool by Mr Earnshaw, the master of Wuthering Heights, who brings him home and rears him with his own children, Catherine and Hindley.

Despite Hindley’s scorn, Heathcliff falls in love with Catherine, who loves him too and her nature is as passionate and fierce as his own. Yet, one day, overhearing that the girl considers a possible marriage with him degrading for her, Heathcliff flees from the place.He returns three years later, rich, thirsting for revenge and still in love with Catherine.

But she is now married to the weak and timorous but wealthy and refined Edgar Linton, the master of Thrush.
