OLIVER TWIST represent a social comment on London society in which Dickens was living in.
Each author ahas a particular poin of view on London.
Dryden criminality (we find it also in Oliver Twist).
Dickens’ fiction; he is a writer who wants to give a a view of vistorian urban society.

He spent most of his life in London (even if he was born in the country); he was ffom a poor famly, his father was always in debt.
So he talked about a world closed to his own experience.
Workhouse; Key-place in London society. It was the place set up for people (like orphans) who found themselves without accommodation.
Oliver Twist is a orphan. Like in Tom Jones; this is a TOPOS of in English literature.

OLIVER TWIST CHARLES DICKENS RIASSUNTO INGLESE

Dickens shows us the situation in these workhouses; people who abuse their power agaist the weaks. They may become very nasty.
Oliver, weak people (to have and to have not) the beadles (sovrintendenti) power, whipping the boys.
Dickens is not an historical, he is a NOVELIST. SO he creates a melodrama in which he exaggerates some aspects of his description.
Some critics said he was a TEAR-JERKER; but he just want to 1) point out political evils 2) become famous to make money. So his exaggeration is a technique. He didn’t published the story in a book, but he split it into chapters that appeared on magazines. So he built every part in order to awaken the reader’s interest pushing him to buy the next. (equivalent of today’s soap operas).
The GREATNESS of Dickens as a social writer: he combine HUMOUR and comedy with social comments.

The is supported by the parish. The Education that Oliver received is part of a protestant education.
Oliver is a very definite protagonist from his birth to all episodes of his life. (Bunion, puritan novel “pilgrim progress” idea puritana dell’uomo diviso tra bene e male). Si chiede: what about this figure called Fagin? What about this figure called Mr. Bumble.
