FIGURE RETORICHE IN INGLESE

Basic Structural Units
Line: A row of words with the same sound at the ends of the lines of a poem.
Layout: The way  in which words are arranged on paper.
Poem: A piece of writing in which the words are chosen for their beauty, sound or imagery.

 
Stanza: A group of lines forming a division of a poem.
Rhythm: A strong pattern of sound used in music or poetry.
Free Verse: A poem without a regular metre.  
Poetry: The art of writing poems
Rhyme: The use of words with the same sound at the ends of the lines of a poem
Run-On line (Enjambement): When a line ends in the middle of a phrase and (the meaning break) comes in the next line.

Assonance: The repetition of the same vowel sound can colour part of the poem with that vowel quality.
Alliteration: The repetition of the same initial consonant sound in consecutive words or words which are close together.
Repetition and refrain: Phrases or lines may that are repeated in the course of a poem to create a musical effect.
Onomatopoeia: The formation and use of words whose sound illustrates their meaning.
Simile: Is a comparison between two things which is made explicit through the use of word of comparison such as like, as, than or resembles.
Metaphor: Is a mean of comparison between two things that are dissimilar and without the use of connective words such as like or as.
Personification: is a type of metaphor which attributes to abstract things or to inanimate objects the characteristics of a living being.
Symbol: Is anything, person place or action that has a literal meaning and also stands for something else such as a quality, an attitude, a belief or a value.
The language of sense impressions: includes noun, adjective and verbs which refer to the five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste touch).
