Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854.

He studied in Oxford and he became a disciple of the theory of aestheticism, accepting the " Art for Art's Sake ". He left Oxford and settled in London. Aestheticism was a search for the beautiful, a science through which men looked for the relationship existing between painting, sculpture and poetry, which were simply different forms of the same truth. He married Constance Lloyd in 1883 who bore him two childern but he soon became tired of his marriage.
In 1880s Wilde wrote some importante stories and the novel "The picture of Dorian Gray". After that he was interested in drama but the novel and the tragedy damaged the writer's reputation because they were considered immoral. In 1891 he met the young Lord Alfred Douglas who became his lover.

He was arrested for his homosexuality and he was put in prision where he wrote De Profundis. He died of meningitis in Paris where he lived under an assumed name and in poverty in 1900. He lived in the double role of rebel and dandy. The dandy is a bourgeois artist who remains a member of his class. He demands absolute freedom. Snce life was meant for pleasure, beautiful book, clothes. talks and boys were Wilde's main interests.
The picture of Dorian Gray is set in London. The protagonist in Dorian Gray a beautiful boy who fascinates a painter, Basil Hallward who decides to make a portrait of him. When Dorian sees the picture he desires to be forever young and handsome.

The signs of age and vice starts to appear on the portrait instead on himself. He lives only for pleasure. When Basil sees the portait, Dorian kills him. When Dorian wants to destroy the picture, he kills himself. When he died the portrait returns to its original form.
Tennyson Ulysses was written in 1833, used to illustrate the dramatic monologue form. Ulysses describes his discontent upon returning to his kingdom, Ithaca, after a long travel. He wants to explore and travel again despite his reunion with his son Telemachus and his wife Penelope. Tennyson's Ulysses recalls Dante's Ulisse in his Inferno in which he is condamned to hell for his pursuit of knowledge ( epistemophylic drive ) and for his negligence despite his family.

Most readers found in Ulysses an hero for his determination underlined by the sentence " To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield ". The event in his life that prompted him to write this poem is the death of his best friend, Arthur Henry Hallam. Some critics finds out a potential ironies in the poem.
