The Age of War: In 1941, the USA entered World War II after the Japanese attack of Hawaii.
More than one million Americans had died or been wounded before the war ended in 1945, when two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
From 1947 to 1952 was organized the Marshall Plan, with the aim of providing massive aid to various European countries and money to help rebuild after the war.

Cold War - In the late 1940s, peace was threatened by the Cold War, which is the time period between World War II and the early 1990s. This was due to the political conflict between the capitalist countries of the West (USA and Western Europe) and the communist countries of the East (Soviet Union and the Eastern Europe). There was no actual fighting, but both sides had large military forces ready for war and threatened each other with nuclear weapons. They also tried to find out each other’s secrets using espionage.

The conflict increased between 1950 and 1953 with the invasion of South Korea by Soviet North Korean troops and in 1962 when the USA learned that the Soviets were planning to install missile bases in Cuba.
The Cold War ended in the 1990s with the collapse of communism and agreements made to reduce military forces on both sides.
