His plays was divided into: apprenticeship, maturity, experiment, tragedy and last plays. The most important themes are theme of power, love, ambition, war, death, conflict between different generation; his characters have this theme.

Hamlet, Shakespeare - Hamlet’s father died so Hamlet’s mother marries Claudius who takes the throne , but Hamlet meets his fathers ghost who tells him that he was murdered by Claudius so Hamlet want to take revenge.

He pretends he’s mad and reject Ophelia, Polonius’s daughter. He asks a group of actors to perform a play a similar fratricide to see reaction’s Claudius, during the play he goes out, hamlet hears a noise and kills Polonius, thinking it’s Claudius. Hamlet was sent to England by Claudius because he wants kill Hamlet, but he manages to escape and comes back to Denmark. Ophelia kills herself so her brother Laertes want kill Hamlet, so Claudius makes to do a duel between the two and he gives Laertes a poisoned sword. Hamlet fatally wounded kills Laertes and Claudius. Gertrude drink a poisoned cup intended for Hamlet and died.
King Lear - Lear decided to divided his kingdom among his three daughter according how much they love him. Regan and Goneril exaggerate their affection to have more inheritance, but Cordelia is disgusted and he says to her father that she loves him as much as is natural for a daughter, but he’s furious and disinherits Cordelia. Lear gives his kingdom to Goneril and Regan with the condition that they maintain him, but they throw Lear in the middle of storm. In parallel the Duke of Gloucester’ illegitimate son Edmund manipulated him saying that the other son Edgar wants to take his lands. Edgar meets the father and Lear and they realise the mistake that they did. Cordelia becomes the queen of France and reunited with her father, but Edmund imprisoned them and at the end everyone dies but Edgar becomes king.

Sonnets. He writes them in the 1590s and they are published in 1609. He used the Elizabethan form: 3 quatrains and a final couplet rhyming. Themes: love, time, beauty, death, friendship, power of beloved and suffering of lover. The first 126 sonnets was addressed to a young aristocratic man, the others to a mysterious dark lady. The sonnets for the young man the principal theme is the platonic love. The appearances are deceptive. He wished to preserve the eternal part of the young man’s beauty against the effect of time. The sonnets for the dark lady reject many of traditional conventions.
Augustan age - The German protestant George of Hanover became king when died Anne in 1714. He didn’t want the return the Catholic successor of James II. George I was an unpopular because of his attachment to Germany. In 1727 his son George II becomes king until 1760, during his last years reign the prime minister and becomes famous for his mercantilist policy and England expanded his colonial possession.
