OSCAR WILDE: THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY

English
The picture of Dorian Gray
Oscar Wilde
He was born in Dublin in 1854 and was educated at Trinity College. Then he won a scholarship to Oxford, where he met Pater and Ruskin, who introduced him to their aesthetic theories.

He settled in London to establish a literary career and became a popular dandy and a spokesman for the school of “Art for Art’s Sake”. He worked as an art reviewer, lectured in the United States and Canada and spent several months in Paris, where he met Mallarmé, Verlaine, Hugo, Zola and Balzac and embraced the hedonistic lifestyle of the Decadents, a late nineteenth century artistic movement that prized beauty and aesthetic experience over everything else. Later he was imprisoned for his homosexual relationship, considered a crime, with the son of an aristocrat.
The picture of Dorian Gray
It is the only novel by Oscar Wilde, who is mostly famous for his plays, poetry, and short stories. The story tells about Dorian, a handsome young man who is retracted by a famous painter, Basil Hallward, attracted by his beauty. Under the influence of Lord Henry Wotton, an aesthete who believes youth to be the supreme value, Dorian wishes that the portrait would grow old in his place. He begins to live an immoral life, based on the pursuit of pleasure, and all the signs of his immorality appear on the painting which is kept hidden in a room. To keep his secret Dorian kills a lot of people and it is only when he looks at the portrait he realizes the horror of his actions. So he decides to destroy it and begin a new life, but in doing so he kills himself. The portrait magically returns to its original beauty while, now old, Dorian die. This act marks a sudden transition from being young and handsome to no longer exist.
From beauty and youth to ruin
Without an understanding of Dorian’s soul, his superficial charm and good looks are meaningless pleasures. Dorian’s being ceases to be whole and he indulges in  hedonistic pleasures. However, he remains detached from these experiences, seeing things solely from an aesthetic point of view, and never really becomes involved in his own life; rather, he watches events unfold in the way a spectator would, and his evil acts bring him to the ruin of his own soul.

LUIGI PIRANDELLO: UNO, NESSUNO E CENTOMILA

Italiano
