TESINA MATURITA' SUL PESSIMISMO
Tanti modi di vivere, pensare e immaginare…il pessimismo.Pessimism in english literature
According to me, talking about a pessimistic vision of life, four of the most important examples are: Thomas Hardy, Siegfried Sassoon, Aldous Huxley and George Orwell. I have chosen to talk about those four writers, in order to underline different aspects of a negative vision of life. Hardy, for example, tried to underline the presence of an enemy nature; Sassoon wanted to put in evidence the war’s horrors, then the last two writers, Huxley and Orwell, wrote about their Negative Utopias.

THOMAS HARDY( 1840-1928 )
Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 in a hamlet called Higher Bockhampton in Dorset, three miles from the town of Dorchester. It’s important to say that Dorset corresponds to the “Wessex” (“land of the West Saxons”) of his novels.
His father, Thomas Senior, was an indipendent builder and his mother, Jemima, at the time of their marriage was in domestic service.
Thomas Jr, was encouraged by his mother to seek the best education they could effort, because of their limited financial resources.
Hardy left school at the age of 16, becoming apprenticed to a local architect; he then moved to London in 1861, and there he could work as an architect assistant.
He left London 5 years later. By 1871, when his first novel, Desperate Remedies , was published, he was again living in Dorset, and he lived there the rest of his life.

In that year, during a visit to Cornwall, he first met Emma Gifford, then he fell in love with her. The two lovers got married after three years, in 1874,and in the same year Thomas published Far from the Madding Crowd.
That work, together with the more famous Tess of the D’Ubervilles and Jude the Obscure are probably the most important novel of Hardy’s production, even if they have been accused of being charachterized by immorality.
Thomas also wrote The return of the native, The Major of Casterbridge, The Woodlanders, which were defined as “Novels of charachter and environment”.
It’s important to say also that from 1871 to 1897, he wrote a large series of novels, and after those twenty-six years he started writing and publishing poetry.
